10 Drill Mistakes Almost Every Beginner Makes (And How to Fix Them Today)
The drill is probably the first power tool you ever owned. It is most likely the first power tool you ever used. And I would bet money it is the one you are using wrong the most.
I know that because I did it for years myself. Stripped screws. Burnt up drill bits. Batteries that were dead after a few months. I blamed the batteries. I blamed the brands. I blamed the bits. Truth is, it was always me.
So today we are fixing all of it. Below are the top 10 drill mistakes I see beginners make, and honestly, most folks who have been swinging tools for twenty years are still making two or three of them. Stick with me all the way to mistake number 10, because that one is costing you the most money and it is quite possibly the most dangerous thing you can do with a drill. Absolutely terrifying.
Once you fix these, your drill is going to last twice as long, your projects are going to come out twice as clean, and you are going to quit throwing money away on screws, bits, and batteries.

Mistake 1: Ignoring the Clutch on Your Drill
This is the big one, and it is the mistake I see more than any other.
Right up front on your drill is the chuck. That is the part that tightens down on your bits. Directly behind it is the clutch, and it has a ring of numbers on it. Sometimes it goes to 11. Sometimes it goes to 16. And I would bet most of you have never touched it. You leave it cranked all the way up and you just squeeze the trigger.
That right there is why:
Your screws are stripping out
You are snapping screw heads clean off
You are breaking bits
You are wearing out drill bits faster than you should
How the Clutch Actually Works
The clutch limits how much torque your drill puts out. When you hear that clicking sound, that is the clutch doing its job. It is stopping the drill from overdriving.
I set my clutch to 5 and drove a 4 inch screw into white oak. It clicked right as the head of that screw hit the surface. Want it to go deeper? Bump the number up. Want it to stop shy? Back it off.
Here is why that matters: once you dial in the right clutch setting, you can drive a hundred screws and every single one of them will sit exactly the same. Unless you hit a knot, they will all be perfect. That is the difference between a project that looks homemade and one that looks built.
Match the Setting to the Job
Your clutch setting depends on three things:
Screw length. A 4 inch screw needs a lot more torque than a 1-1/4 inch screw.
Screw diameter. Bigger screws need more grunt.
Wood species. White oak is a completely different animal than pine.
When I switched from that long screw down to a short one, I had to back the torque way off so it would not overdrive and strip out the wood fibers, which means the screw just spins in the hole and holds nothing. That is exactly what the clutch is there to prevent.
What About the Drill Bit and Hammer Icons?
Past the numbers you will see a drill bit icon and sometimes a hammer icon.
Drill mode turns the clutch off entirely. That is what you want when you are drilling holes so the clutch does not click and stall out mid hole. You can drive screws in drill mode, but you will strip a lot of them.
Hammer mode is for masonry. It adds vibration and a hammering action to the bit so it chews through concrete and block. You need a masonry bit to go with it.
Heads up before you buy: not every drill is a hammer drill. The RIDGID drill I showed only goes to drill mode. RIDGID makes hammer drills too, but if you grab the wrong box off the shelf you might not get one. Check the clutch ring before you check out.
Mistake 2: Chucking the Bit in Crooked
I still do this one, and I have been at this thirty years.
You get in a hurry, you jam a bit in there, you crank the chuck down, and you go. But if you are not careful, especially with small bits, only two of those three jaws will grab the bit. Now it is wobbly.
A wobbly bit gives you:
Broken bits
Oversized, sloppy holes
Holes that are not where you marked them
The fix is simple. Take one extra second and make sure the bit is seated dead center so all three jaws bite it evenly with the same pressure all the way around. Give it a spin and eyeball it before you commit to your workpiece.
Good news: quarter inch hex shank bits and driver bits are far less likely to seat crooked because of the flats on the shank. Round twist bits are the ones that give you trouble.
One more tip, I usually let the drill itself spin the chuck closed to speed things up. Some folks prefer to twist it down by hand. Either works. Just be aware that a spinning chuck will burn your fingers if you are new to it and not expecting it.
And yes, you have to spin the chuck when you pick the drill up. That is a rule. I do not make the rules.
Mistake 3: Using the Wrong Speed Setting
On top of almost every drill is a little flip switch marked 1 and 2. Some, like the DeWALT 3 speed drill, have three. That is your gear selector, and it caps the top RPM of the drill.
Most people set it once and forget it. That is costing you clean holes.
High Speed for Wood
Here is the general rule: in wood, faster is almost always cleaner.
At slow speed the bit gnaws at the wood instead of cutting it. That is what leaves you a fuzzy, torn out mess. Spin it fast and the bit slices, throwing off actual shavings.
Try this: watch what happens when you start a hole slow in a 2x4. The entry tears out and looks terrible. Start that same hole at full speed and the bit sucks right through with a clean rim on top.
Fun fact for the pocket hole crowd: the faster you spin a pocket hole bit, within reason, the cleaner the hole. If your pocket holes have been ugly, max out your speed setting and try again.
Low Speed for Metal and Big Bits
Slow speed exists for a reason.
Metal. Slow the bit down, add a little more pressure, and let the bit do the work. Heat is the enemy of every cutting tool, and slow speed keeps the heat down. Add a drop of cutting oil if you have it.
Large diameter bits. A big Forstner bit removes a mountain of material. Spin it too fast and you will scorch the wood and dull the bit.
Auger bits. Wood Owl Overdrive bits generally like to run fairly quick, but I have found in some material that dropping to gear 1 gives me a noticeably cleaner hole. Test it on a scrap first.
Remember, your trigger is variable speed. The switch on top only limits the ceiling. Feather that trigger to start a hole with control, then get on it.
Mistake 4: Grabbing an Impact Driver When You Need a Drill
A drill and an impact driver look like cousins. They are not the same tool at all.
An impact driver hammers rotationally. It will sink deck screws and lag bolts like nobody's business. But it has no clutch, and that is the whole problem.
The Simple Rule

General rule of thumb: drill for holes and small screws, impact for big screws and lag bolts.
Now I will be the first to admit I am as guilty as anybody. I have driven thousands of pocket hole screws with an impact driver. Did I strip some out? You bet I did. And if you have never tried to back a stripped screw out of a pocket hole, let me save you the trouble. It is miserable.

Mistake 5: Using the Wrong Drill Bit for the Job
This is where a lot of beginners lose clean results without ever knowing why. Every bit type exists for a reason. Here is the honest breakdown of what I actually keep in my shop.
Twist Bits
Your standard, everyday drill bit. Pilot holes, general purpose holes, all of it. Every shop needs a set. The tiny ones snap regularly, so having an assortment on hand is about as handy as a shirt pocket.
Brad Point Bits
Same idea as a twist bit, but with a sharp little point on the tip. That point drops right into your mark and keeps the bit from walking. These are my go to for precise holes in wood. They are so sharp you often do not even need a punch mark first.
Forstner Bits
Every wood shop should own a set of Forstner bits. Period. They cut flat bottom holes, they will drill on an angle without wandering, and they leave the cleanest edges you will find.
Budget pick: the Irwin Forstner 8 Piece Set or the Irwin 14 Piece Set. Around fifty to sixty bucks for basically every size up to two inches you will need in and around the shop. If this is your first set, start here.
Upgrade pick: the Fisch Wave Cutter Forstner Set. These are wildly expensive. Wildly. But the metal quality is excellent, they stay sharp for years, and the holes are glass clean.
Auger Bits
The Wood Owl Overdrive bits drill some of the fastest and cleanest holes I have ever seen, and that includes the back side of the board. They are genius for the price. You can still blow out the back if you push too hard, so ease off at the end or use a backer board.
Countersink Bits
If you want screw heads to sit flush or below the surface without cratering the wood around them, you need countersinks. They cut the pocket for the head to nest into.
Self Centering Bits
If you hang a lot of cabinet doors or install hardware, self centering bits are a lifesaver. Set the tip in the hardware hole and drill. It centers itself. Your hinges will actually line up.
Step Bits
For metal work, step bits are excellent for opening up existing holes quickly and cleanly.
Spade Bits
Honest opinion: I am not a fan of spade bits in the wood shop. They were made for rough construction, like boring through a stud to run wire or plumbing. They have their place, and I own a set, but for woodworking every other bit on this list will do a better job. If you need them for rough work, the DeWALT Spade Bit Set gets it done.
Hole Saws
Hole saws are a little annoying. They scorch wood if they are dull and they do not stay sharp long. But when you need a hole bigger than a Forstner will go, nothing else will do.
Driver Bits
My name is Matt and I have a driver bit problem. Milwaukee, Makita, DeWALT, RYOBI. If I see a set, I buy it. But I will tell you what, I have never once been stuck without the right bit.
Mistake 6: Skipping the Setup Tricks That Take Ten Seconds
These are the little habits that separate clean work from work you have to apologize for. None of them cost much and all of them save projects.
Use a center punch. Mark your spot and put a small dent in it so the bit cannot walk. A spring loaded center punch is inexpensive and I use mine constantly.
Use painters tape as a depth stop. Wrap a piece of tape around the bit at your target depth and drill until the tape kisses the surface. I have used this trick hundreds of times. It costs nothing.
Use a backer board. Clamp a scrap behind your workpiece and drill through into it. The wood fibers stay supported and the exit hole comes out clean instead of blown out.
No backer board? Drill from both sides. Go until you just see the tip of the bit poke through the back, then flip the board and finish the hole from the other side. Clean on both faces.
Always drill a pilot hole near the end of a board. Use a bit slightly smaller than the screw shank and go all the way through. This is the single easiest way to stop end grain splitting, which is one of the most frustrating things that can happen at the very end of a build.
Mistake 7: Not Using Attachments That Make Your Drill Ten Times More Useful
Your drill can do a lot more than you are asking of it.
Right Angle Attachment
The right angle drill attachment drops your bit ninety degrees off the drill so you can get into spaces you have no business getting into. I have had my DeWALT one for years and the one before it never wore out either. I use this constantly when I am driving pocket hole screws between two legs of a project. For what it costs, it is one of the best values in the shop.
5 in 1 Installation Drills
If you have the budget, this is the smarter buy. The DeWALT 5 in 1 and the Milwaukee Installation Driver come with interchangeable heads:
Standard drill chuck
Right angle head
Offset head
Quarter inch hex driver head
They pop on and off in a second. If you are brand new and want one drill that covers almost everything, this could genuinely be the only drill you buy.
Drill Guides and Portable Drill Presses
Nobody drills a perfect ninety degree hole by feel. Not you, not me.
A Milescraft Drill Mate Pro style portable drill press attaches to your drill and gives you repeatable, accurate holes at ninety degrees or on a set angle, over and over.
A simple Kreg drill guide does the same thing for a lot less money if you just need straight up and down.
Dowel Jigs
If you want to step up your joinery without buying a big machine, a quality dowel jig paired with your drill is one of the cheapest ways to get there. Strong joints, no fancy equipment.
Mistake 8: Buying the Cheapest Bits You Can Find
I get it. A pack of bits for a couple bucks looks like a deal. It is not.
Cheap bits use cheap metal. Cheap metal will not hold an edge. Here is what you actually get:
Bits that dull after a handful of holes
Ragged, oversized holes
Bits that snap off inside your workpiece
More money spent over a year than one good set would have cost
Buy quality once instead of junk five times. I stick with the name brands, DeWALT, Makita, Milwaukee, and the like. The higher price almost always reflects better steel, and better steel stays sharp.
One exception worth knowing about: bulk kits that carry multiples of the same common sizes are worth it, because the small twist bits break the most and having spares of the sizes you use daily is genuinely useful. That 100 piece set is a good example.

Mistake 9: Eyeballing Your Hole Location
I make this one all the time, so I am preaching to myself here.
You get confident. You figure you can hit that spot without marking it. Then you miss it by an eighth of an inch and the whole thing looks like garbage.
Do not eyeball it.
Make the mark
Punch the mark with a center punch
Use a brad point bit so the tip stays put
Then drill
Thirty seconds of layout will save you an hour of rebuilding a part. Ask me how I know.
Mistake 10: Leaving Batteries on the Charger (The Dangerous One)
Here it is. The single worst thing you can do with a drill, and it does not even happen while you are using it.
You finish up for the day, you pop the battery off, you drop it in the charger, and you walk out and shut the door.
Do not do that.
I have seen it too many times to ignore. Folks have lost shops and lost homes to fires that started at a charger. A charger fails to shut off, or a cell in the pack fails, and it just keeps pushing current until it overheats. This is not a knock on DeWALT or any other brand. It has happened across every brand out there, and when investigators go back through the ashes, the culprit is frequently a battery that was left charging unattended.
Battery Safety Habits That Actually Matter
Only charge batteries when you are there. I charge while I am working in the shop and pull them before I head inside.
Set a timer on your phone so you have a reason to come back for them.
Never charge on or near anything flammable. Sawdust is fuel. Keep your charging station clear.
Do not leave packs sitting at 100 percent forever. Lithium cells like to be cycled. Run them down some and charge them back up.
I am guilty of forgetting sometimes. We all are. But this is the one habit on this list that is worth building a routine around, because everything else on this page costs you a screw or a bit. This one can cost you your shop.
Make Your Batteries Last Longer
Batteries are not cheap. No matter what brand you run, they are the expensive part of the system. Treat them right and they last.
Avoid temperature extremes. No baking in a truck bed in July, no freezing in an unheated shop in January.
Keep them dry.
Cold packs are weak packs. I actually tested this. I threw a couple of batteries in the freezer and then went out and drilled with them. The power difference was obvious. Room temperature packs walked all over the cold ones.
Heat does long term damage. Cold hurts performance today. Heat hurts the pack forever.
I know that on a job site you do not always get a choice. But when you do, a normal, dry, moderate environment will add real life to every pack you own.

The drill is the most versatile tool in your shop, and most of the frustration people have with it comes down to a handful of habits nobody ever bothered to teach them. Set the clutch. Seat the bit. Pick the right speed. Mark your holes. Pull your batteries off the charger.
Do those things and your tools last longer, your projects come out cleaner, and you spend a whole lot less money replacing stuff you should not have worn out in the first place.
