Is RYOBI Launching a "Pro" Line? Blacked-Out Tools and Shocking New Patents Uncovered
RYOBI has been synonymous with that iconic "high-visibility" green for over 20 years. But recently, they dropped something that stopped me in my tracks: a limited-edition, blacked-out 30th Anniversary drill and vacuum. While most people see a cool collector’s item, I see a massive clue about the future of the brand.
I’ve been doing some digging into recent patent filings, and what I found is shocking. We’re talking about a complete redesign of the track saw, smarter battery technology, and job site power systems that point toward one thing: a higher tier of RYOBI tools. I’m calling it the ONE+ HP Edge line.
In this post, I’m going to prove my case that RYOBI is stepping into the professional ring. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a pro looking to save some coin, you’ll want to see what's coming down the pike.

1. The 30th Anniversary "Black-Out" Clue
For 30 years—from 1996 to 2026—RYOBI has kept the same battery platform. That compatibility is a huge value for woodworkers. But this year’s Limited Edition 30th Anniversary Black Drill feels like a branding test.
A lot of folks tell me they don't buy RYOBI because they think the green looks "DIY." This black-and-green scheme looks professional, sleek, and—dare I say—job site ready. If RYOBI wants to change their reputation from "homeowner grade" to "pro-sumer," changing the clothes is a great first step.
2. Evidence in the Patents: A Better Track Saw and "Smart" Tech
I uncovered several patent filings that suggest RYOBI is fixing the biggest complaints pros have with their current lineup:
The Track Saw Redesign: My biggest gripe with the current RYOBI Track Saw is the plunge mechanism. New patents show a refined plunging system with better lockout features. This could finally turn it into a true plunge saw that competes with the big boys.
Battery Internals: New patents focus on how cells are connected to handle "high draw" tools. This means bigger circular saws, miter saws, and table saws that won't overheat or bog down.
Smart Tool Control: Imagine your sander automatically turning on your RYOBI Link Vacuum via Bluetooth. The patents suggest "Smart" communication between tools and chargers is on the way.
3. The Power of "Edge" Technology
The current ONE+ HP Edge Batteries use tabless cell technology to deliver more torque and faster cuts. Currently, you can’t get these in combo kits—you have to buy them separately.
I believe the "Pro" move for RYOBI will be launching the HP Edge Line, where every combo kit comes standard with these high-performance batteries. If they expand this to 8Ah or 12Ah capacities, they’ll be punching way above their weight class.
4. Top ONE+ HP Tools You Can Buy Right Now
You don’t have to wait for the future to get pro-level performance. These current HP tools are already "knocking on the door" of professional grade:
ONE+ HP Router: This is one of the best-made cordless routers I own. The micro-adjustment dial is fantastic for precision woodworking.
Barrel Grip Jig Saw: I prefer the barrel grip over the D-handle any day. It’s smooth, square, and handles like a dream.
18v Brushless Circular Saw: With the metal base and rafter hook, this saw is built for more than just DIY projects.
AirStrike Brad Nailer: A staple in my shop for years. No hoses, no compressors—just fast, reliable nailing.
5. Playing in the Big Leagues: The 40V Line
RYOBI is already proving they can handle "Pro" power with their 40V outdoor equipment. From the 40V Self-Propelled Mower to the 40V Chainsaw, these tools are replacing gas engines for professionals every day. If they bring this 40V power to a stationary table saw or a heavy-duty miter saw, the game is over.
Practical Takeaways for Your Shop:
Invest in HP: If you’re doing more than just hanging pictures, skip the base models and go for the ONE+ HP (High Performance) line. The brushless motors are worth the extra investment for longevity and power.
Safety First: When using high-torque drills, be mindful of your wrists. I’m hoping to see RYOBI add "anti-kickback" tech in their next generation of pro drills.
Upgrade Your Batteries: If your circular saw feels sluggish, try an Edge battery. The tabless technology makes a noticeable difference in "high-draw" situations.
