The $50 Tool That Saves Hundreds

H3: Klein Pinless Moisture Meter When you are just getting into beginner woodworking, one of the biggest lessons you will learn is that wood moves. If you build a project with lumber that has high moisture, it can crack, twist, and warp as it dries. This Klein Moisture Meter is an absolute lifesaver.

  • Why it matters: It checks the moisture in both hardwood and softwood.

  • Pinless design: Unlike other meters that require you to stab prongs into your beautiful lumber, this one simply sits flat on the surface without damaging the wood.

  • Target numbers: You want your wood under 13 percent moisture before building. I recently checked a thick piece of white oak that was still in the 20s, which is way too wet. But my shop dried walnut was perfectly safe to use.

If you want one of these, you better grab it quick because they will not last long at this price.

Essential Layout and Table Saw Safety

Milescraft Layout Square Milescraft makes some incredible products. You might know them for their awesome Milescraft Track Saw Guide, but this little Milescraft Layout Square is fantastic for setting up miter saw upgrades and dialing in your tools.

  • Built in shoulders: Easily reference the edge of your stock for drawing perfectly square lines.

  • Angle scale: Perfect for quickly finding a 45 degree angle.

  • Depth setting: Use the outside edge to set the depths of your table saw blades and router bits.

Speaking of the table saw, I cannot stress table saw safety enough. While you are grabbing the layout square, I highly recommend picking up the Milescraft Grabber Pro Push Block. It is an incredible push block that keeps your fingers far away from the blade, acting as a great Gripper alternative. Always use good push blocks and Featherboards to prevent kickback. And if you ever have the budget, upgrading to a SawStop is the ultimate investment in your shop safety.

Must Have Hand Tools for the Shop

Klein Tools Flickblade Utility Knife Opening boxes of new tools is always a good time, but this Klein Tools Flickblade 2 in 1 Utility Knife is basically a three in one tool.

  • It locks into place at an angle for comfortable cutting.

  • It features a built in wire stripper.

  • Best feature: A fold out scraper! This is incredibly handy for scraping dried glue off your woodworking projects.

  • It even holds an extra blade right inside the handle.

Klein Tools Thirteen in One Ratcheting Screwdriver I absolutely love having these style screwdrivers in the shop. The ratcheting mechanism on the Klein Tools 13 in 1 Ratcheting Screwdriver saves an incredible amount of time.

  • Turn the base dial left, right, or lock it in the center.

  • Pull out the bit holder to find Star Drive, Flathead, and Phillips bits.

  • Pro tip: These bits are impact rated, meaning you can pull them out and chuck them right into your impact driver! If you are ever in need of a good drill or extra bits for the shop, definitely check out this Kobalt Drill Kitand these Drill Bit Sets.

Clamping, Hammering, and Drilling Like a Pro

Irwin Quick Grip Hybrid Clamps You can never have enough clamps. I have relied on Irwin quick grips for a long time, but this hybrid version is completely new to me. You can grab the Irwin Quick Grip 12 inch Hybrid Clamp or the longer Irwin Quick Grip 24 inch Hybrid Clamp. You get it snugged up just like a regular quick clamp, but then you can use the specialized handle to add extra clamping force. Sometimes you just need a little more oomph to bring a joint together, and this clamp delivers exactly that.

Spec Ops Hammer My old hammer was literally cracked and glued back together. When I saw this military inspired Spec Ops Hammer, I had to have it.

  • Rubber mallet cover: It comes with a slip on cover that turns the hammerhead into a non marring rubber mallet. This is perfect for bumping joints into place without denting your beautiful hardwood.

  • Magnetic nail setter: Tucked under the cover is a magnet to hold your nails for one handed setting.

  • Giving back: Spec Ops donates 3 percent of proceeds to veteran and first responder causes. What is not to love?

Kreg Drill Guide This is one of those incredibly cheap tools you might walk right past at Lowes, but you will regret not having it. For under ten bucks, the KREG Drill Guide ensures you drill a perfectly straight 90 degree hole every single time.

  • Features hardened steel inserts from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch.

  • Includes a hidden groove on the bottom that self centers on 3/4 inch and 1/2 inch stock.

  • Perfect for drilling straight dowel holes or hardware mounts.

Woodworking Shop Improvements and Organization

I have a confession to make. I am guilty of having a massive mess in my shop drawers. Nobody likes spending 20 minutes looking for a tape measure when you only have an hour of free time to build.

  • TEKTON Storage Trays: I bought several of these organizers, including the TEKTON 10 Compartment Storage Tray and the TEKTON 3 Compartment Storage Tray. They perfectly separate my pens, squares, and small tools. Opening an organized drawer and knowing exactly where everything is saves a ton of time and looks amazing.

  • CRAFTSMAN Magnetic Trays: These collapsible bowls, the CRAFTSMAN Magnetic Trays, are perfect for holding small screws so they do not roll under your workbench.

  • CRAFTSMAN Magnetic Pickup Tool: If a screw does fall into a tight spot, the flexible CRAFTSMAN Magnetic Pickup Tool will reach down and grab it, saving you a whole lot of frustration and keeping you from saying any dirty words.

  • Kobalt Tool Bag: The Kobalt Tool Bag is a heavy duty zippered bag with plenty of pockets. Perfect for loading up your gear to fix something inside the house without making ten separate trips. You can also Shop All Kobalt Tool Bags if you need a few different sizes.
