Is This "Secret" Home Depot Find the New King of Track Saws?

I’ve shopped at Home Depot hundreds of times. Usually, I’m headed straight for the Ryobi section, checking out the latest from Milwaukee, or seeing what’s new with Makita and DeWalt. But on a recent trip, I stumbled across something I didn't even know Home Depot sold—and it’s a tool that might just shake up the "Mount Rushmore" of woodworking.

We’re talking about the Hilti Nuron Cordless Track Saw.

Now, if you’ve been around construction, you know Hilti for their legendary hammer drills and industrial-grade gear. But a track saw for fine woodworkers? I had to grab it and put it through its paces to see if it can actually compete with the likes of Festool and Makita.

Out of the Box: First Impressions

Right away, the build quality on this saw is sweet. It feels incredibly balanced in the hand, very similar to the Makita 40V or the Milwaukee M18. The plunge action is smooth as butter, and even with the beefy 9Ah battery, it doesn't feel lopsided.

One thing to note for my fellow tool junkies: Hilti doesn’t really do "combo kits" yet. I had to piece together the saw, the charger, and the batteries separately.

Pro Tip: Hilti’s battery labeling is a bit confusing. They don’t stamp the amp hours on the side like Milwaukee or DeWalt. You’ve got to look at the fine print, but generally, the 4Ah and 9Ah are your go-to choices for this saw.

3 Unique Features You Won’t Find Anywhere Else

Hilti included a few "secret weapons" on this saw that I haven't seen on the other 15+ track saws I've tested.

1. The Built-in Arbor Cover

Most woodworkers have to buy 3D-printed covers to seal up the side of their saws to improve suction. Hilti built a swinging door right into the side. It pops open for blade changes and snaps shut for cutting, making a massive difference in containment.

2. The Smart Splinter Guard

On most saws, when you switch from a 90-degree cut to a 45-degree bevel, you end up cutting into your plastic splinter guard. Hilti solved this. When you tilt the saw for a bevel, the base actually offsets the blade so it misses the splinter guard entirely. That means one track, one guard, and no constant replacements.

3. An Unbeatable 20-Year Warranty

This is the big one. Most pro tools give you 3 to 5 years. Hilti offers a 20-year warranty and a one-day turnaround on repairs. If you’re running a business where "time is money," that kind of support is hard to ignore.

Real-World Testing: Hardwood and Plywood

I took some walnut and some shop-grade plywood to see if the power matched the price tag.

  • Hardwood Performance: I used a 24-tooth ripping blade on thick walnut. The saw didn't even bog down. It’s easily on par with the power of the DeWalt 60V or the Makita 40V.

  • Plywood Performance: Switching to the 54-tooth fine finish blade gave me crisp, clean edges with zero tear-out.

  • Dust Collection: Hilti claims "virtually dust-free." Now, it’s good—really good—but I wouldn't call it "virtually" gone. It’s on par with Festool, but you'll still see a little bit of fine dust.

Safety Reminder: Even with "dust-free" claims, always wear your PPE! A good track saw is safer than a table saw for breaking down big sheets, but your lungs still need protection. How It Ranks: The "S-Tier" Comparison

Does it dethrone the kings? Here is how I see the current landscape:

  1. Makita 40V Track Saw: Still the S+ Tier king for me because of the features and the track quality.

  2. Hilti Nuron: Definitely S-Tier. The warranty and the offset bevel feature make it a pro-level beast.

  3. Milwaukee M18 Fuel: The best choice if you are already on the M18 battery platform.

  4. Festool TS 55: The gold standard for refinement and the best anti-kickback tech.

Actionable Takeaways for Your Shop

  • If you want the best warranty: Go Hilti. 20 years is unheard of.

  • If you want the best track: Buy the Makita Guide Rail. It actually works perfectly with the Hilti saw and is a bit "stickier" on the bottom than Hilti’s own track.

  • Don't skip the clamps: I used MicroJig Track Clamps with this setup. Even with a "grippy" track, clamping ensures a perfect cut every single time.

Final Thoughts

The Hilti Nuron is a "buy once, cry once" kind of tool. It’s expensive, and piecing the kit together is a bit of a headache, but the performance and the 20-year peace of mind are incredible.

If you’re tired of wrestling 4x8 sheets of plywood onto a jobsite table saw, a track saw will change your life. Whether it’s this Hilti or a tried-and-true Makita, just get one!
