Evolution and SKIL table saw upgrades for small shops

The Evolution Table Saw is a compact saw with features normally found on saws two and three times the price, including a rack and pinion fence and built in outfeed support. For beginners, those two features are huge. Outfeed support lets you rip longer boards without fighting or tipping and the rack and pinion fence keeps cuts straight and accurate.

If you want the best entry level table saw for the money the SKIL Table Saw remains a favorite of mine. I am buying one again to see if the value still holds in 2025 but in previous tests it performed far above its price point.

Beginner takeaway:
If you have a cheap contractor saw or you are using a hand held circular saw to make your rips, one of these table saws will instantly level up your woodworking.

Breaking down sheet goods without owning a track saw

Track saws are amazing but they are expensive. A smart budget solution is the Milescraft Track Saw Guide which turns almost any circular saw into a track style cutting system. It is square, straight and consistent which matters a lot for cabinet making and plywood projects.

The KREG Mortise Mate gives you loose tenon joinery without needing a Domino. Use this on face frames, desk drawers and cabinet doors. The setup is simple and results are nearly identical to Domino style joinery.

The JessEm Box Joint Jig is one of the easiest ways to cut finger joints I have ever tested. It uses a router table and includes multiple key sizes for different joint widths.

If you work with small long panels regularly, a Dremel Blueprint mini miter saw in a box might surprise you with its usefulness.

Sanders that surprised me this year

The Festool 18v Sander includes a raking light so you can see every scratch instead of guessing during sanding. For heavy wood removal and lighter machine weight the Makita 40v Sander is excellent.
