Makita's pricing is generally more stable than the other major pro brands, so when real discounts appear, they matter more. Here's what I watch for before anything makes this page:
Real price history, not inflated MSRP. Makita does occasionally run "sales" that aren't much off the regular street price. I check recent pricing and only list tools where the current price is genuinely lower than what it's been trending at.

Makita 18V LXT vs. 40V XGT: Which Platform Should You Buy?
This is the question I get asked the most about Makita, and since I run both platforms in my shop, I can give you the honest answer instead of the marketing one.
18V LXT is the workhorse. Over 300 tools run on the LXT platform, and the battery ecosystem goes back 15+ years with full backward compatibility. For general woodworking, finish carpentry, drills, impact drivers, circular saws, oscillating tools, and the broad everyday tool lineup, LXT is still the right answer. It's what I reach for 80% of the time.
40V XGT is the heavy-duty future. Higher voltage, higher power, better performance on demanding tools — miter saws, large circular saws, blowers, the bigger equipment. XGT is where Makita is putting most of its new tool development, and the lineup is growing fast. If you're buying a heavy-draw tool, XGT will outperform the LXT equivalent.
36V LXT (X2) is the bridge. Some of Makita's bigger tools still run on dual 18V LXT batteries for 36V power. This was how Makita handled high-draw tools before XGT launched, and those tools are still being made. If you already have a big LXT battery collection, a 36V X2 tool lets you use what you already own.
Here's the honest reality: XGT and LXT don't share batteries, and that's been the biggest friction point for people buying into Makita lately. If you're starting fresh and planning to run a mix of tools, you'll probably end up owning both platforms eventually. That's not ideal, but it's also how my own shop is set up — LXT for most things, XGT for the heavy work — and it's worked fine.
If you can only buy into one right now, start with LXT. You'll get access to the broader tool lineup, and you can add XGT later when a specific heavy tool makes the case for it.

Makita 40V XGT Miter Saw. The 10" dual-bevel slider on XGT has enough power to rip through hardwood cuts like corded tools used to. The battery life is strong enough that I can knock out a full day of finish work on a single charge.
Makita 18V LXT Random Orbital Sander (XOB01). The sander I reach for on every project. Variable speed, smooth vibration dampening, and it doesn't beat up your hand the way cheaper sanders do. A finish woodworker's workhorse.
Makita 18V LXT Track Saw (XPS01). This one earns its price tag. The cut quality is exceptional, battery life is better than I expected, and the tracks lock in predictably every time. For breaking down sheet goods in a small shop, nothing beats a good track saw, and Makita's is among the best.
When Makita Runs the Best Sales
Makita's promotional calendar is a little quieter than Milwaukee or DeWalt, but the sales that do happen are meaningful. The biggest windows each year:
Home Depot Pro Appreciation (June). Makita shows up with real kit discounts and occasional free-tool promotions. Not as aggressive as Milwaukee's Home Depot promotions, but the deals are real.

XGT makes sense when you're buying a specific heavy-duty tool where the extra power matters (miter saws, blowers, large circular saws). Most serious Makita users end up with both eventually.
Are 18V LXT and 40V XGT batteries interchangeable? No. They're completely separate platforms — different batteries, different chargers, different tools. This is the biggest friction point in Makita's current lineup, and there's no adapter to bridge them. If you're building a collection, plan accordingly.
What's the difference between XPT and regular Makita tools? XPT stands for "Extreme Protection Technology" — Makita's name for enhanced dust and water resistance. Most of Makita's newer brushless tools are XPT rated, meaning they're built for tougher environments. Non-XPT tools still work fine for shop use but are less robust in harsh conditions.
