Is RYOBI Launching a Pro Line? The Truth Behind the Blacked-Out Tools
RYOBI has been "Team Green" for over 20 years , but they just dropped something that has the tool world talking: a limited-edition blacked-out drill and vacuum. While some folks think it’s just a cool new paint job for an anniversary, I’ve been doing some digging into recent patent filings, and I think this is a major clue.
In this post, we’re going to look at why RYOBI might be moving toward a higher tier of tools—what I’m calling the OnePlus HP Edge Proline. From shocking new track saw designs to massive battery upgrades, the pieces are lining up for RYOBI to step out of the DIY shadow and into the big leagues.

The Clues: 30 Years of Innovation
The RYOBI OnePlus battery platform has been around since 1996. That’s 30 years of using the same battery design on every tool, which is a huge value proposition for us as customers. But this year, they left a specific note on their roadmap: "The platform remains constant, but the future keeps evolving"
That evolution starts with the Blacked Out HP Drill. It’s not just a standard DIY tool; it looks professional, it’s less "homeowner-ish," and it performs like a beast. At only $99 for the special edition, it’s one of the best value drills you can buy.
4 Reasons RYOBI is Going "Pro"
1. Tools Punching Above Their Weight Class
The current OnePlus HP (High Performance) line is already knocking on the door of pro-level tools.
The Router: Shares design functions with Milwaukee and features a fantastic micro-adjustment dial.
The Circular Saw: Recently upgraded with a metal base, rafter hook, and a more powerful motor.
The Jigsaw: The barrel grip version is one of their better inventions, providing smooth, square cuts every time.
2. The Shocking New Patents
I uncovered several patents that suggest RYOBI is fixing their biggest weaknesses to appeal to pros:
A Real Track Saw: The current model isn't a true plunge saw. The new patent points to a refined plunging mechanism that would make it a legitimate contender for shop use.
Smart Tool Control: When you power on one tool, another (like a vacuum) powers up automatically.
Fastener Delivery: New tech to prevent jams in their nailers, making them faster and more consistent for high-demand work.
3. Battery Technology (The Foundation)
You can't have Pro tools without Pro power. I found patents for 12 Ah+ 18v batteries and smarter charger communication. This helps high-draw tools like table saws and miter saws run longer without overheating. Currently, you can't even buy the high-end Edge batteries in combo kits—I think that’s about to change.
4. The 40V Powerhouse
RYOBI is already playing in the "big leagues" with their 40V line. From lawn mowers to chainsaws and even pressure washers, they are proving they can handle high-voltage tasks. I even found a patent for a 40V robotic lawnmower.

Final Thoughts: Green or Black?
I believe the "Green" line will stay the reliable workhorse for the DIYer, but this "Black" branding is a test for a premium, job-site-ready line. If RYOBI can keep the price below Milwaukee or DeWalt while offering these pro features, they are going to dominate.
